Have you ever been faced with a difficult situation that you would rather not deal with in hopes that it would work itself out? I know you know what I’m talking about because we’ve all been there. You’re the founder of the organization and you need to inform one of your board members that his or her services are no longer needed, but the words won’t come out of your mouth. How about the family member who is repeatedly committing an offense against you, and you don’t have the courage to address it. Maybe this is one you can relate to: you rehearse feelings of guilt, shame, and doubt over and over in your mind to the point where you feel like you are going to have a mental breakdown.
Here’s a newsflash: HANDLE THE ISSUES AND SITUATIONS BEFORE THE ISSUES AND SITUATIONS HANDLE YOU.
This is not a recommendation, but rather a requirement for the difficult decisions in life. The natural response is to ignore the situation in hopes that it will minimize and dissolve on its own. However, the truth of the matter is that the situation or issue will grow more and more until it explodes in a negative way.
Let’s consider this analogy. What happens when a cup of water is accidentally or intentionally spilled? Does the water spill clean itself up or does it require the action of someone to clean it up? The longer the spill is left alone, the more it spreads with the potential to damage carpet, important papers, and photographs. The appropriate response is to use your authority over the spill to clean the spill immediately with a towel to minimize the possible negative effects of the accident. Likewise, you have the power and authority to resolve the difficult situations in a proactive manner rather than being reactive. Here are some tips:
If you handle the issue or situation on the front end, then you can be confident that you took control of it and minimized the hurt feelings and loss of character as much as possible. If the situation or issue handles you, stress, anxiety, and depression set in more and more and when the situation escalates damage control is necessary. Your character is comprised and you will see the error in your actions in hindsight. Conflict will arise in life, so get into the practice of using the authority you possess and extinguish the flames before they become wildfires.
